Career development

At Gloucestershire County Council, we are constantly challenging ourselves to improve the services we provide in keeping the County moving forward.  We pride ourselves on finding the most effective and efficient way of improving the lives of the people of Gloucestershire.  For all the good that we do, none of it would be possible without the compassion and dedication of the 4000+ staff who help us truly make a difference – and that’s where we need you!

Career development programme

It’s just as important that you develop and grow with us as we move through our improvement journey. All employees in Finance have regular supervisions and annual personal development reviews as well as a comprehensive Continuous Professional Development programme – helping you make the most of your career.

Training and development

As a GCC employee, you will be eligible to attend a whole host of training opportunities. This includes our corporate training package, with a mix of online and in-person training on topics including Leadership and Management, Courageous Conversations and Unconscious Bias, as well as courses to help your personal life such as on planning for retirement. We also offer coaching and mentoring programmes across the organisation.

We are really keen to ensure that you are given the opportunity to try out different roles to build your skills and develop professionally. This is why we regularly share internal secondment opportunities as a chance to step up or try something new to really challenge yourself. We also use an internal transfer policy which allows for temporary or permanent movement within the service (T&C’s apply).

Career pathways

For many, progressing in your career is important and at GCC, your development is important to us too. We want to make sure that you reach your potential and achieve your goals which is why we are dedicated to providing you with the support that you need to advance in your career. We provide a clear and defined pathway through our Graduate Finance Trainee Program. This means that upon joining us, you could become a permanent member of the team 3 years later!

If working your way up to management level is not for you, we have many horizontal development options available too so you can explore different areas of practice and make your mark.

Throughout your career at the council, you will be supported by your managers to help you advance through the pathway.
