The Highways Skills Academy is led by Gloucestershire County Council and its delivery partners:

  • Ringway – Term Maintenance Contractor
  • WSP – Professional Services Contractor
  • Tarmac – Structural Maintenance Contractor
  • M Group – Street Lighting Contractor

Apprentices will receive training and gain experience across multiple functions of Highways and across all partners within the Academy.


Who can join the skills academy?

The academy aims to provide a range of excellent quality entry and progression pathways within highways. It's for people from all backgrounds, and with all levels of experience.


Apprentice pathways

We have apprentice pathways at the following levels:

  • Level 2 (GCSE level)
  • Level 3 (A level)
  • Level 4 (HNC level)
  • Level 5 (HND level)
  • Level 6 (Degree level)
  • Level 7 (Masters Degree level)

STEM Apprentice event in Dursely

On Thursday 25 September we enjoyed meeting pupils from years 11, 12, and 13 at Rednock School's STEM Apprentices Event:

Rednock School, Dursley – STEM Careers Day

A team from Highways attended the Rednock STEM Careers Day on Friday 7 February 2025. A total of 700 pupils attended from years 8 through to Sixth Form and we highlighted the wide variety of jobs available within GCC Highways and the various apprentice pathways/qualifications that are on offer. A big hit was the live demo of FixMyStreet and students were able to download the app via the QR code.

Henley Bank High School visit Shire Hall

During January 2025 we were very pleased to welcome students from Henley Bank High School to discuss career opportunities in Highways including our apprenticeship pathways. Presentations were followed by a bridge-building challenge with excellent teamwork and creativity demonstrated - well done Henley Bank High School!
