This film demonstrates the importance of identification and support for children and young people with a parent in prison.
Watch the film here.
An estimated 312,000 children are affected by parental imprisonment each year. Since there is no statutory mechanism to identify these children, we do not know who or where they are. In some cases when an adult is sent to prison, their children are left living completely on their own, without an adult in the house and agencies being unaware of their situation.
Nationally, research shows that 65% of boys with a parent in prison go on to commit an offence. Of the 940+ children we have supported as an organisation, only five have gone on to offend, showing a fall to just 0.5%. This is a stark statistic that shows the enormous impact of simple, targeted support for these children.
