Similarly to other local authorities across the UK, GCC declared a climate emergency in 2019, cementing the Council’s key role in driving a more environmentally conscious and sustainable way of living for communities and businesses in Gloucestershire. We have been working closely with suppliers to address climate-related issues.
Our suppliers have donated or invested a total of £15,770 towards sustainable afforestation/ reforestation and biodiversity conservation initiatives. A further £1,792 has been invested so far in innovative measures to address the climate emergency and safeguard the environment with a focus on incorporating local community voices into the discussion.
Social value that focuses on reducing emissions and improving air quality can contribute to meeting the ambitious net zero targets both within Gloucestershire and at national level. To date our suppliers have:
🌲 Saved 14,994 tCO2e through de-carbonisation efforts, which is equivalent to the emissions produced by 107 million kilometres of driving.
🚘 Saved 12,520 car miles on contract as a result of green transport programmes, such as cycle-to-work schemes and carsharing initiatives, reducing emissions and congestion on roads. An additional 14,747 car miles have been driven using no or low emission staff vehicles (for business use).
🚮 Saved 460 tonnes of waste through reuse of products and materials, well over the committed target of 13.9 tonnes, reducing the volume of produce going to landfill.
Other suppliers have focused their social value efforts towards promoting and investing in sustainable practices to help ensure a thriving economy and planet for future generations. 100% of contracts that committed to include sustainability procurement commitments delivered on this measure. This includes embedding contractual requirements such as sourcing produce locally, reducing food waste or keeping resources in circulation longer before disposal. Additionally, for contracts committing to reducing plastic waste, 91.25% of all plastics were recycled on contract, greatly reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

Solo Service Group, who provide cleaning and caretaking services for the council, have made positive social value contributions through environmental initiatives. These include:
-
Offsetting all scope 1 and 2 emissions associated with business activities in line with the PAS2060 carbon neutral standard by collaborating with the Carbon Offsetting provider Ecologi. Between 2022-2024, £6,480 (864 tCO2) worth of offsets were bought from Ecologi which went on to support international climate projects, specifically Solar PV generation in Indonesia, methane capture to generate energy in India and rainforest protection in Brazil.
-
Switching to the zero plastic and 100% biodegradable Jangro Enviro Sachet range for cleaning chemicals and packaging, avoiding using 5.33 tonnes of plastic packaging.
-
Supporting local conservation efforts by donating £4,770 to the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust’s Corridor of Life appeal. This aims to rebuild areas of hedgerow and orchards between the Forest of Dean and Wyre Forest to provide shelter from traffic and unsustainable development for threatened local wildlife, preventing further biodiversity loss. Find out more about the appeal.

Caterlink provide school meals in Gloucestershire and pride themselves on delivering healthy and nutritious meals that use locally sourced produce.
Caterlink have worked hard to build a sustainable food waste management strategy across the 180 primary schools they cater for across the UK. Food waste is split into three categories:
- Plate waste
- Production waste
- Preparation waste
Plate waste is reduced by creating meals that appeal to children and are positioned correctly. A cooking matrix has been delivered so the right number of meals are prepared each day to reduce production waste. By weighing total food waste at the end of the day, Caterlink make frequent adjustments to menu items to reduce production waste.
These small changes help to reduce serious environmental impacts associated with catering services, such as reduced water, emissions and energy used during production and packaging stages, as well as reduced waste to landfill.
