Understanding the gender pay gap

Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) gender pay gap based on data from 31 March 2023.

The gender pay gap (GPG) shows the difference in the average earnings between all men and women within our organisation. We acknowledge that this report represents the legal sex of a person and may not be the gender they identify with.

Gender pay gap vs. equal pay

The gender pay gap is different to equal pay. Equal pay relates to men and women receiving equal pay for equal work. The gender pay gap is concerned with differences in the average earnings of men and women, regardless of role or seniority.

Equality Act

Under the Equality Act 2010 (specific duties and public authorities) regulations 2017, gender pay gap reporting requires organisations with 250 or more employees to publish a gender pay gap report.

Understanding the median gap

The median gap is the difference between the median hourly rate of pay of male and female 'fullpay relevant employees'.
