Why I Enjoy Working in Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire is a beautiful county to live and work in. I love getting out and about across the different localities, enjoying the stunning scenery and meeting passionate professionals who are committed to supporting children and families. There is a genuine drive to make a positive difference, and I feel proud to be part of that.

The Support I Receive

I have only recently moved into the Principal Social Worker role, but the support I have received has been excellent. My induction was thorough, and my manager has been mindful that this is a new role for me. I have felt well supported throughout the transition.

My development is regularly discussed through supervision, and I am encouraged to engage with regional and national networks to continue learning and sharing best practice.

What's It Like to Work in Gloucestershire?

I am based in our Social Work Academy in the heart of historic Gloucester. It is a vibrant and welcoming environment where practitioners come together for training, development and learning.

The Academy is led by a dynamic team of managers and advanced educators who are passionate about innovation and professional development. There is a real culture of support and celebration, where colleagues encourage one another to succeed, with perhaps the occasional slice of cake along the way.

How My Work-Life Balance Is Supported

I benefit from a healthy balance between office and home working. I enjoy spending time with colleagues in person while also having the flexibility to work from home when I need quieter, focused time.

Flexible working arrangements allow me to balance my professional responsibilities with family life, including protected time with my children. Having worked for Gloucestershire for more than five years, I also benefit from enhanced annual leave, which further supports my wellbeing.

How My Career Has Developed

I joined Gloucestershire from another local authority as a Newly Qualified Social Worker, working within safeguarding services. Following a five-year career break to raise my children, I returned to Gloucestershire and continued working in the area of practice I am most passionate about: safeguarding children.

Throughout my career, I have progressed through a number of roles, including Senior Social Worker, Deputy Team Manager, Team Manager and Service Manager. I have also led project work, developed specialist areas of practice and completed leadership programmes that have strengthened my management and leadership skills.

I am now excited to hold the role of Principal Social Worker, focusing on driving high-quality practice and supporting our workforce to achieve the best outcomes for children and families.
