6.28 Children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) have difficulty in communicating with others. This may be because they have difficulty saying what they want to, understanding what is being said to them or they do not understand or use social rules of communication. The profile for every child with SLCN is different and their needs may change over time. They may have difficulty with one, some or all of the different aspects of speech, language or social
communication at different times of their lives.
6.29 Children and young people with ASD, including Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism, are likely to have particular difficulties with social interaction. They may also experience difficulties with language, communication and imagination, which can impact on how they relate to others

Our Lead Advisory Teachers each specialise in one of the areas of need identified in the SEND Code of Practice and lead on that area for ATS. This ensures that ATS can offer specific advice and support for SENCOs and staff on setting suitable outcomes following a plan, do, review approach (Gloucestershire Graduated Pathway).

C&I refers to children and young people who have needs related to:
• A diagnosis of autism
• Language and communication
• Social communication and interaction

It is the Speech and Language Therapy Service which will work with school age children and young people to provide advice on appropriate language targets and programmes.
The Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Specialist Team supports children and young people who use communication aids and staff in school who support them. The AAC Specialist team co-ordinates the requests for aids, contributes to assessments and supports settings to be communication inclusive. Link to form

We are able to:
- Provide support to assess the impact of language and communication differences on a pupil's access to the curriculum
- Provide support and advice on improving pupil access to the social and academic curriculum
- Support transitions based on individual needs between classes, key stages and settings: taking account of existing good practice and successful strategies
- Support children and young people who are returning to mainstream settings from Alternative Provision schools
- Work together with staff and provide advice regarding how to plan reasonable adjustments and appropriately adapted teaching

- Support the school in preparation for team around the child/family meetings and contribute to EHCP Annual Reviews
- Contribute to a multi-agency assessment of a child’s needs
