Exciting news for new cycle path in Cheltenham
The work represents a further £2.9 million of investment in cycling infrastructure that the county is making in support of our cycling and walking objectives and will provide another section of the Gloucestershire Cycle Spine, for which we have secured more than £48 million so far.
The A435 Cycleway, when finished, will link Cheltenham to Bishop’s Cleeve, providing a new and improved walking and cycling route. The A435 Cycleway will form part of the cycle spine, linking Stroud, Gloucester, Cheltenham and Bishop’s Cleeve, greatly improving walking and cycling options to homes, employment, education and transport hubs. It will support a greener Gloucestershire and help the county council’s aims of becoming carbon net zero by 2045.
Contractors Wills Bros Civil Engineering Limited have been awarded the contract to build the first section of the A435 Cycleway, between the Prince of Wales Stadium and Cheltenham Racecourse Roundabout, with works due to start on 13 November 2023.
A ‘Meet the contractor’ event will be held on Wednesday 25 October 2023 between 10am and 8pm at the Cheltenham (All Saints) Scout Hut, at Central Cross Drive, Pittville, Cheltenham, GL52 2TW.
The contractors will be joined by officers from Gloucestershire County Council and design consultant AtkinsRéalis, who will be on hand to provide further details about the project and answer questions.
Cllr David Gray, cabinet member for environment and planning, said: “This new route is an essential part of the 26-mile walking and cycling corridor we’re building across the county, which will help to create a greener Gloucestershire.
“It will actively help reduce carbon emissions and will provide a safe route to encourage more active travel and make cycling more appealing. The meet the contractor event will provide an opportunity for local residents and businesses to find out more about the work planned and ask any questions they have, so I would encourage anyone interested to attend.”
