Have your say on school admissions

Gloucestershire County Council wants to hear your views on the admissions arrangements for the county’s schools.

The county council has launched a consultation to gather feedback on the admissions arrangements for both county council run schools and some academies from 2025/26 onwards.

The council is not proposing to make any changes to the admissions arrangements for council run schools, however, it has a legal duty to consult every seven years.

When schools are oversubscribed, the current arrangements give priority in the following order:

  1. A ‘looked after child’ or a child who was ‘looked after’ but has recently been adopted.
  2. Children who have siblings at the school.
  3. Children who live closest to the school.

The council is also running the consultation on behalf of the following academies:

  • Blockley Primary
  • Carrant Brook Junior
  • Cirencester Deer Park
  • Cleeve School
  • Cold Aston Primary
  • Cranham Primary
  • Longborough Primary
  • Pittville School
  • St. James and Ebrington C of E Primary
  • Swell Primary
  • Winchcombe School

Two academies are proposing to make changes to their current admissions arrangements: Cleeve School and St. James and Ebrington C of E Primary.

Cleeve School is proposing to introduce priority places to siblings of children at their school before those who live closest geographically. The school is also proposing to increase the priority given to staff members’ children and update some of the definitions in their admissions policy.

St. James and Ebrington is proposing to remove the priority places for parents who regularly worship at a C of E church, to reflect its inclusive school vision.

Alongside the consultation on admissions arrangements, Beech Green Primary School is consulting on reducing the number of pupils it accepts each year (its Published Admissions Number or PAN) from 60 to 45, due to a drop in local pupil numbers in the area. It is not proposing to make any changes to its admissions policy.

The consultations will run for seven weeks to 17 November 2023.

Cllr Philip Robinson, cabinet member for education, skills, and bus transport, said: “We know school admissions are important to parents and we want to make sure all families have the opportunity to feedback on these proposals.

“Whether you think changes should be made to our arrangements or if you want them to stay as they are, I encourage you to have your say before 17 November.”
