‘Library of Things’ launched to promote sustainability

Gloucestershire Libraries are this week launching a new initiative and hosting a range of events aimed at promoting sustainability as part of ‘Green Libraries Week’.

The week, which runs from 2-8 October, will celebrate the Greener Together initiative which explores ways in which libraries can help to tackle climate change.

It also aims to raise awareness of the global climate challenges we face and support individuals and local communities who want to take practical steps towards leading a greener, lower carbon lifestyle.

Green Libraries Week will see the launch of a new initiative enabling people to borrow expensive equipment for one-off DIY projects.

Gloucestershire Libraries have teamed up with Charlton Kings Parish Council and sustainability charity Vision 21 to launch the brand-new Library of Things.

Items which are not often used, such as pressure washers, drills, gazebos and more, will be available to borrow from Charlton Kings Library and all people need is a free library membership.

The offer aims to help people save money, as well as space, as these items will no longer need to clutter up a garage or shed.

A range of free events are also being held during libraries week, including animal encounters with ZooLab, an Outdoor Learning Session with Wild & Green, Junk Journal Modelling and waste and recycling talks. You can browse and book events at gloucestershire.spydus.co.uk

Libraries will also be running a Halloween Costume Swap between 9 October and 1 November to help reduce waste and support the cost of living. They are currently appealing for costume donations across Gloucestershire and anyone who can help is encouraged to get in touch with their local library.

You can keep updated throughout Green Libraries Week on everything Greener Together including suggested reads, regular events, and much more, by following Gloucestershire Libraries on social media.

Cllr Dave Norman, cabinet member for libraries, said: “Green Libraries Week is a great opportunity to promote the important work libraries do to help mitigate climate change and help people lead a greener lifestyle.

“It will also see the launch of The Library of Things, which is a fantastic initiative to help save people money if you are planning a DIY project. There is also a range of free events taking place at libraries throughout the week so I would encourage everyone to have a look at what is on offer.”
