Temporary one-way system to be introduced on London Road
The cycle spine is supporting sustainable and active travel within Gloucestershire making it easier for people to cycle, and encouraging active modes of transport.
Under the new arrangement, westbound traffic (travelling towards the Black Dog Way/Bruton Way junction and onwards to Gloucester Transport Hub/Gloucester Rail Station main entrance) will not be permitted. Eastbound traffic towards the hospital and the University of Gloucestershire, Oxstalls Campus will remain open as normal.
As the project moves into the next phases, the temporary mini roundabout at the junction of London Road and Black Dog Way will remain in place to help manage traffic flow.
The change is necessary due to the limited width of the road, which means it is not possible to safely maintain two-way traffic while protecting both the public and the workforce. Completing the work this way will also allow it to be done more quickly.
A clearly signposted diversion route will be in place to help minimise disruption and support road users travelling through the area.
The diversion will take drivers east along London Road, before using Estcourt Road and Kingsholm Road to access the Black Dog Way/Gouda Way junction. The alternative diversion route will take drivers east along London Road, before using Barnwood Road, Eastern Avenue and Metz Way to access Bruton Way. It will not be possible to access Alvin Street from Kingsholm Road during the work.
The temporary arrangement is expected to remain in place until early October 2026.
The council recognises the importance of maintaining clear and convenient access to Gloucester Royal Hospital for visitors and staff, and is working to introduce additional signage along diversion routes to help make journeys as straightforward as possible. The council has worked with the hospital and bus companies to ensure they are aware of the work before the closure takes place.
Cyclists travelling towards the city centre will be asked to dismount and use the footway, as cycling against the traffic flow will not be permitted during this period.
A plan showing the working areas, as well as pedestrian and traffic diversion routes, is available in the Traffic Management section of the project webpage. The Gloucestershire Cycle Spine now links Bishop’s Cleeve to Gloucester, via Cheltenham and Churchdown.
Cllr Roger Whyborn, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Transport and Road Safety at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “We understand that this temporary one-way system will cause some inconvenience for road users and apologise for any delays caused to journeys.
“The temporary change is needed to allow work on the Gloucester city centre section of the Cycle Spine to progress safely.
"The Gloucestershire Cycle Spine will make it easier and safer for people to choose cycling for everyday journeys, helping to cut congestion, improve air quality and support healthier, more connected communities.”
