Roadworks Information and Planned Road Closures
Black Dog Way and London Road walking and cycling improvements

Construction is underway at the Black Dog Way junction, having started on 9 February. A Meet the Contractor event took place on Wednesday 4 February 2026 from 10am – 6pm at Gloucester Heritage Hub, Clarence Row, Alvin Street, Gloucester GL1 3DW.
Lane widths have been reduced on approaches to the junction and a temporary mini roundabout installed. From the start of the project, turning right from London Road onto Black Dog Way is no longer available, and this change is now permanent. This measure is essential for maintaining junction capacity, improving traffic flow and protecting priority for buses and emergency vehicles.
An overview of the proposed phases of work can be found here.
🚴Information for cyclists🚴
Northgate Street is closed to all traffic during construction, including cyclists. If you are travelling in this direction via London Road, please dismount where indicated and follow the pedestrian diversion using the footway.
Thank you for your patience while these improvements are carried out.
🚌 Great Western Road Bus Stop (outside Esso Garage) – Suspension
The Great Western Road bus stop on London Road (outside the Esso Garage) was suspended on 3 April 2026. This stop has been permanently removed, with a new replacement stop to be provided on Northgate Street as part of the project. Passengers travelling to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital should use the Depot bus stop as the nearest alternative.
Temporary Traffic Layout - mini-roundabout
This arrangement will remain in place until later phases of the project, when the permanent junction layout and traffic signals are reinstated.
The temporary mini‑roundabout is a tried and tested way of managing traffic during construction. It has been used successfully on other busy routes, such as the B4063 and the A435, helping to keep vehicles moving while work takes place.

We will be keeping a close eye on how it operates once installed, and we kindly ask drivers to approach the junction with care as everyone gets used to the temporary layout.
🚦To help people cross safely, temporary signal‑controlled pedestrian crossings are in place on both Black Dog Way and Bruton Way. Please note that these signals are only for pedestrian crossings, they do not control the roundabout. Drivers should continue to follow normal roundabout rules and give way as usual.

Phase 3 works 21 April to 2 July 2026
From 21 April, the footpath between the Great Western Road junction and No. 20 London Road will be temporarily closed to enable the next phase of works to take place. The footpath is expected to reopen after 2 July, subject to progress on site. This phase of work will be carried out alongside the ongoing Phase 2 works.
During this phase, works will include site clearance, upgrades to the existing drainage, improvements to the signalised pedestrian crossing, and alterations to the current footway alongside the construction of a new cycle lane.
Access for Wellington Parade residents will be maintained throughout the works, with vehicle access to car parks and properties available.
Contractor Newsletters:
Northgate and Southgate Street
We are pleased to share that most of the Phase 1 improvements are now complete, helping to make the city centre more welcoming and easier to navigate for both cyclists and pedestrians.
A few final tasks are still underway:
Northgate Street
Some of the imprinted tarmac areas still need to be painted. This work requires warmer weather so the surface coating can be applied correctly. We will continue to monitor conditions and aim to complete this in late spring, once temperatures are suitable.
Southgate Street
The permanent pedestrian crossing near the Tall Ship could not be delivered at this stage due to issues with underground utilities. It will now be included in the next phase of Southgate Street improvements, planned for later this year. Until then, the current arrangements continue to provide a safe and reliable place to cross.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout these improvements.
