Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why are the works needed?
The bridge requires a replacement deck and associated structural improvements to address defects and maintain the long-term safety and resilience of the structure.
Is the bridge currently safe?
Yes. The bridge continues to be monitored and inspected while preparations for the scheme are progressed.
Why has the scheme been delayed?
The project has experienced delays associated with utility works and diversion requirements which must be completed before construction can proceed. These activities are being coordinated with utility providers and other stakeholders.
When will construction take place?
The programme remains subject to utility diversions, land agreements, approvals and procurement. However the planned timeline is
- Winter (this year): Scaffold installation and preparatory works
- Next year: Main construction works and bridge deck replacement
Further updates will be provided once the construction programme is confirmed.
Why is there a 7.5 tonne weight restriction on Winchcombe Bridge?
Following detailed structural assessments of Winchcombe Bridge, it was identified that a 7.5 tonne weight restriction was necessary to help protect the bridge and ensure it can continue to be used safely. The assessments indicated that restricting heavier vehicles was required to maintain the bridge's structural integrity and safeguard members of the public. The restriction has therefore been introduced as a precautionary measure to reduce loading on the structure while longer-term repair solutions are developed. Gloucestershire County Council regularly assesses its bridge assets and implements appropriate measures where necessary to ensure public safety and protect critical infrastructure.
