Your rights

You have a number of rights over your personal data, including requesting access to your personal data, restricting its use, for it to be corrected or deleted. Not all of these rights are automatic, and some may not be available to you at all times, as it will depend on what gives us the right to use your personal data in the first case. For instance, where there is a legal obligation for us to withhold or retain data we won’t be able to delete it.

To protect your personal data, we will ask for proof of your identity before taking action on your request. If we are already satisfied about your identity this won’t be necessary.

You may authorise someone to act on your behalf; in these cases we will need both your and their identification and also your written consent for them to act for you.

The council is required by the law to respond to your requests within one month of receipt of the request. We may extend that period by a further two months where necessary, for example when the request is complex. If we need to extend the period then we will tell you why.

If the council is unable to fulfil your request, we will explain our reasons.
