Battle of the pothole repair machines

Photo of three pothole repair machines

Each spring we increase our pothole repair operations to address the damage caused by winter weather and make the most of the warmer and drier weather which is more favourable for making lasting repairs.

How we’re strengthening the county’s roads:

👉 This year more engineers are out making urgent repairs. In addition to our usual repair teams we have 'Find and Fix' teams fixing smaller potholes before they get worse. When possible, all our teams tackle smaller potholes near by to any safety critical ones that they are repairing.

👉 The Spray Injection Patching machine operated across the county during the spring and summer.

👉 The JCB Pothole Pro worked in every district starting in the Forest of Dean.

👉 We are testing new techniques for longer lasting repairs. Trials of a Bobcat machine and a Roadmender have been carried out.

As part of the council’s ongoing investment in our roads and to create better journeys for residents, the council has tested four devices, racing them across the county this spring and summer: The Roadmender, The Bobcat, The Spray Injection Patching Machine and the JCB Pothole Pro.

In the finale of the machine trials, this Friday in Fairford, both the Roadmender and Bobcat operated along the same stretch of road in direct competition (pictured below).

A full evaluation of the season’s trials will be conducted over time to determine the rate and quality of the repairs carried out. The winning machines will join the council’s growing road repair arsenal.

Resurfacing

Surface dressing

Surface dressing is an economical and commonly used way to extend the life of a road.

The treatment uses bitumen and chippings to seal the surface of the road against water and air, which causes damage to the road over time. It improves skid resistance and road safety because the chippings which are added to the bitumen binder give increased grip.

This month we carried out surface dressing from Burford Road to Larket Hill Wood in Aldsworth, and from Burford Road to the county boundary in Barrington. We also carried out surface dressing in Great Barrington, Andoversford, Donnington, Paxford, Blockley, Cutsdean, Alderton and on Teddington through Road in Tewkesbury.

Pothole repair expansion

As part of this year's trials, more resources have been committed to preventative work. This means that when a pothole repair team is called out to fix a dangerous pothole, they now often have more time to also fix any other smaller potholes within the immediate area too. This approach is expected to help reduce the number of problem potholes in the county by fixing them earlier.

Surface dressing

Surface dressing is for roads that are nearing the end of their life but haven't yet started to fail. You can't apply surface dressings to roads that have deteriorated significantly, so this means that roads being treated may be in a better condition than some others in the county.

We have carried out resurfacing on more than 40 roads across the county this season, see the full list of roads on the surface dressing page.
