Signing and Lining

Road signs and markings

The highways team are responsible for maintaining road signs and road markings on Gloucestershire’s public highways.

These help keep people safe and ensure the road network operates effectively.

What we maintain

Our Highways team looks after:

  • Traffic signs, including speed limits and warning signs
  • Directional and information signs
  • Road markings such as centre lines, edge lines, arrows and yellow lines

Our approach

We inspect the road network regularly and carry out maintenance where needed. This includes repairing or replacing signs and markings that are:

  • Damaged or missing
  • Faded or hard to read
  • No longer correct or required

We prioritise work based on safety risk and the importance of the route.

Report a problem

If you see a problem with a road sign or marking, you can report it online.

When reporting, please include:

  • The exact location
  • A description of the issue
  • Photos, if possible

This helps us assess and respond as quickly as possible.

Appropriate visibility of warning signs is essential to ensure road users are aware of approaching hazards. Report overgrowing vegetation blocking road signs via Gloucestershire County Council report it page

Road markings play a key role in conveying safety information and traffic requirements, particularly in situations where upright signs may be obscured. They also provide a continuous visual message to road users.

If you wish to request that road markings are refreshed, this can be reported directly via Gloucestershire County Council’s “Report It” page, where the issue can be logged and assessed.

Report and view local issues

Once reported, requests are reviewed and prioritised based on factors such as safety, condition, and available resources.

Warning signs are used to alert drivers to potential hazards ahead and to encourage appropriate caution. While such signage can enhance road safety, it is important that signs are used appropriately and sparingly, as overuse can reduce their effectiveness.

In the first instance, we recommend contacting your local councillor as they are in regular contact with the highways authority and can help raise and prioritise local concerns.

All requests are considered alongside factors such as existing site conditions, safety evidence, and national guidance.
