Slimbridge Parish contract with Edward Jenner (P298a/VE/2/1)

Born in 1749, Edward Jenner was the eighth child of the Reverend Stephen Jenner, vicar of Berkeley.  Aged 14, and after attending schools in Wotton-under-Edge and in Cirencester, he was apprenticed for 7 years to Daniel Ludlow, a surgeon in Chipping Sodbury, where he gained the experience needed to become a surgeon himself.  In 1772, after finishing his medical training at St. Georges College London, he returned to Berkeley where he became a medical practitioner – working for local parishes and private patients.  This image from the Vestry minutes of the parish of Slimbridge is a contract made between Jenner and the parish for treating the sick.  With some fairly interesting approaches to spelling – notably ‘liquise’ for ‘likewise’ – it reads:

May 1th 1775

At a Vestrey Meeting held this Day (as Well as an Order at this time standing in a Book kept for that purpose and Liquise the scence of the Vestrey on Easter Monday Last) that Mr Edward Jenner Surgeon and Apothecary now Living at Berkeley in the County of Glocester Should Attend Shuch poor people as should be Sick or Lame as Well Internall as Externall Illnese’s that should hapen to the said poor of the parish of Slimbridge in the sd County – We now make this protest that he the Above said Mr Jenner he and Only he shall Execute this Our Order – And Whosoever in or Belonging to this parish (as Well Church-wardens as Overseers of the poor) Do and Will Imploy Any other person in the practice and Business above Mentioned Shall pay and be at Shuch Expence and Expence’s them selves Without the Assistance of the parish Above Said – To Confirm this We here unto Subscribe Our Names
