Littledean Gaol

D14791/2/96

Onesiphorus Paul was able to build four new Houses of Correction at Northleach, Lawford's Gate, Littledean and Horsley.  Only Littledean, now a museum, survives intact, though the front of Northleach is still complete.  Lawford's Gate was largely destroyed by fire during the 1831 Bristol riots and was pulled down in 1926 while Horsley was demolished by 1878.  Apart from being smaller, they were all were similar to the new gaol at Gloucester and were intended to be run with the intention of fulfilling current ‘modern ideas’ on prison life with regards to provision of work, controlled diets, health and religious education.
