Prison Regulations

Q/AG/18

Like all of us, prisoners were subjected to rules and regulations governing their behaviour. Punishments could be harsh and included isolation, the treadmill and flogging.  They had to rise at 5.45am in the Summer and 6:45am in Winter.  Half an hour was allotted for breakfast, and hour for dinner and half-hour for supper.  Work finished at 8pm.  Gloucester gaol was notoriously cold and in 1801 experiments were undertaken to install central heating systems via underground flues below some of the cells.
