Gloucester City Gaol Register

GBR/G3G/3/1

This is part of a page from the register for the City Gaol.  It contains a rich vein of offences; theft, prostitution, ‘keeping disorderly house’, assault, failure to provide sureties for a warrant, failure to appear, sodomy, misbehaviour towards master (apprentice), leaving their master without permission (apprentice), running away from workhouse and vandalism (breaking 6 panes of glass).  The punishments listed include imprisonment (with or without a fine) ranging from 1 to 6 months, fines (ranging from sixpence to one Guinea), flogging and being ‘privately whipped’.  The latter presumably means that the flogging was carried out within the city gaol and not publicly.
