Heritage Schools Programme

The Heritage Schools Programme aims to help schools imbed local history into their curriculum. The project promotes partnerships between schools and local heritage sites such as museums, religious sites, local history groups and other places of historic interest. It aims to enhance the sense of pride and belonging for the young people of Gloucester (and increasingly, the rest of the county). The project is led by Voices Gloucester with support from Gloucestershire Archives and with funding provided by Historic England.

We have worked with dozens of teachers, freelance artists, photographers and filmmakers, heritage site professionals, presenters, journalists, historians, authors, educators and many others. We have ongoing support from Voices Gloucester, Gloucestershire Archives and Historic England.

Our projects have actively engaged with just short of 500 young people and we have created a lasting legacy of pride and interest in local history.

Heritage Schools Training

We have run training days for primary and secondary schools for the last two years. The central training session was run by Michael Gorely of Historic England who explained how to place local history and pupil-enquiry learning at the heart of the curriculum. The day also included a presentation by Voices and a tour of Gloucestershire Archives. During lunch there was a marketplace run by the Gloucester Heritage Forum for Teachers. Teachers were encouraged to apply for the Heritage Schools Award, given by Historic England. The Award is a nationally-recognised benchmark demonstrating expertise in local history. Three schools have so far attained this status.

First Heritage Training Day

Date: 30 September 2022

Attendees: 6 primary teachers, 6 secondary teachers, 3 both, 3 heritage partners TOTAL: 18

Second Heritage Training Day

Date: 20 October 2023

Attendees: 7 primary teachers, 5 secondary teachers, 1 both, 4 heritage partners TOTAL: 17

Teachers were also given planning time during training from which the following projects emerged.

The Gates Street Project: a child’s eye view of Gloucester

In the summer of 2023, six local primary schools undertook tours of the four historic ‘gates streets’ of Gloucester city centre with Gloucester Civic Trust. The children produced artwork and text which were used to create a leaflet and an exhibition held at The Folk.

Date: May to September 2023

Attendees: 6 primary schools; 180 pupils from years 4, 5 and 6; 18 teachers & school staff

The Heritage Conference Day for Year 12s

The Heritage Conference Day for Year 12s. Approximately 100 students and their teachers attended the Heritage Conference Day on 12 July 2023. Held at the aspirational University of Gloucestershire, the pupils enjoyed a day of history talks and workshops.

The Headline Speaker was TV Presenter and Historian, Tracy Borman, who spoke about Elizabeth I and Anne Boleyn. The students also chose to attend a workshop about either storytelling, Windrush Now, archaeology or fake news. The feedback from the day was so good that we have decided to run it again! The next Heritage Conference Day will take place on the 28 June this year.

First Heritage Conference Day for Year 12s

Date: 12 July 2023

Attendees: 100 students from Year 12; 10 teachers

Second Heritage Conference Day for Years 10 and 12

Date: 28 June 2024

Attendees: 65 students; 5 teachers

Blue Plaque Project: A History of your School

In the summer of 2024, three local primary schools will take part in a project about the history of their schools. Thirty pupils from each school will attend a fact-finding mission at Gloucestershire Archives where they will have a tour behind the scenes, a presentation and also an opportunity to view school punishment books, log books and photographs from the past.

All relating to their school! A film maker will then visit each school to record a short film about the school’s history with the pupils involved. These videos will be included on the school website, as well as a blue plaque at the school.

Date: May – June 2024

Attendees: 90 pupils from years 4, 5 and 6; 12 teachers and staff

Heritage Ambassadors for Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire schools have been invited to nominate pupils from years 10 and 12 to become Ambassadors for the county. Meeting every half term, the students will help steer history policy at heritage sites, as well as enjoying free tickets to talks at the History Festival and Gloucester Cathedral.

Date: May 2024 – ongoing

Attendees: 15 students from years 10 and 12, coming from 7 different Gloucestershire schools

Schools & Heritage Newsletter for Gloucestershire

We have also created a newsletter to go out to all schools in Gloucestershire. The newsletter includes news, offers and upcoming events for heritage sites in Gloucester. The Gloucester Heritage Forum (GHF), a group of local sites who meet several times a year provide the content. We began sending out newsletters in February 2023.

Number of school newsletters: 12

Regularity: Every half term plus there have also been several ‘special’ newsletters advertising upcoming Voices events

Recipients:

Newsletters 1 – 5: received by approximately 90 schools

Newsletters 6 - 12: received by approximately 390 schools

The reason for the increase is that we have gone from a predominantly Gloucester-based recipient list, to the entire county. The current list includes all primary, secondary, independent and special schools in Gloucestershire. In addition, the list includes all the teachers we have worked with on the various projects listed above. The content remains mainly Gloucester-focused.

Although the members of the GHF are not on the initial mailing list, a copy is always forwarded to them once it has gone out. This accounts for a further 50 recipients.
