INTRODUCTION: 18 minutes
- Ask the class anything they know about the Severn. With any children that know quite a lot, ask them to suggest any river vocabulary that the rest of the class may not understand, eg, bore, tide, sandbank, etc.
- Use ‘1.5a A – Z of Severn vocabulary’ to aid discussion and demonstrate the weird & wonderful language of rivers.
MAIN ACTIVITY: 35 minutes
- Provide the class with the ‘1.5b Completing a Severn word search’ worksheet to complete the ready made Severn word search individually or in groups.
- Once finished, check with ‘1.5c Answers to the Severn word search’ if required.
- When the Severn word search has been checked, provide the class with ‘1.5d Making your own Severn word search’ and ‘1.5a A - Z of Severn vocabulary’ to make their own Severn word searches. This could be about the rivers in general or if the children know enough, it could be specifically about the River Severn.
PLENARY: 10 minutes
- When pupils finish creating their own word searches, allow them to swap with partners to have a go at finding the words in their word searches.
- Finish by moving around the class and asking pupils to say a word related to the river that they have learnt.
