Gloucester Rugby Heritage

The Gloucester Rugby Heritage project began in 2007 when hundreds of documents and photographs dating back to the 1800s were discovered at Gloucester Rugby Club following the demolition of the old grandstand.  A keen band of rugby fans were recruited as volunteers to help with an initial sorting of the material which was transferred to Gloucestershire Archives for permanent preservation.   It quickly became obvious that the collection had huge potential and so the Gloucester Rugby Football Club Community Heritage Project was created.

In 2008 the project was awarded a 3-year grant by the National Heritage Lottery Fund to supplement funding by project partners Gloucestershire Archives and Gloucester Rugby Club.   This was used to finance the delivery of a web site, permanent static displays at the Club, educational materials linked to the National Curriculum, and temporary displays for use at events.  Volunteers also worked with archive staff to fully catalogue the Club’s archive, as well as additional material donated to the Archives by over 50 individuals.

The project has continued well beyond the initial 3 years.  The project heritage team continue to add content to the website, support the transfer of material to the Archives, and have also researched and published several books, including three volumes of official Club history.
