Listers of Dursley

An advertisement poster for Lister Engines, with the motto 'It's the power behind it that counts'

In 2016 we were awarded a grant by the Business Archives Council which enabled us to preserve and catalogue the important business archive of R A Lister’s & Co Ltd of Dursley, engineers.  “Listers” was at the heart of the local community for over 100 years, employing some 5000 people in its heyday.  But in 2014 Lister Petter, as it had become, went into administration and was taken over by the Birmingham-based EGL Group.  When the new owners closed the Dursley premises down, the Gloucestershire Society for Industrial Archaeology (GSIA) led local efforts to save the archive from destruction.  The on- site salvage operation also involved the Dursley Heritage Centre and the Museum of Power, based in Wales and saw the core archive transferred to Gloucestershire Archives. GSIA volunteers then helped to clean, package and box the collection and supported cataloguing by compiling around 1,000 detailed entries for the online catalogue.
