The Single Gloucester folk archive

The Single Gloucester project was led by Gloucestershire Traditions, a non-profit-making organisation, working with partners Gloucestershire Archives and Gloucestershire Music Makers.

The project’s aim was to preserve and promote the traditional folk song heritage of the historic county of Gloucestershire.  Although some of the county’s local songs are known the world over, hundreds of songs lay forgotten and unpublished, scattered in archives across the United Kingdom, the USA and in out-of-print sources.  A key aim of the The Single Gloucester was to bring theses all together on a user-friendly website, called GlosTrad.  Other aspects of the project involved biographical research into the county’s folk singers and musicians, and re-introducing local folk songs to schools and community choirs.  The full collection gathered for the project is preserved in our collections as D13660.
