On the day
Useful things to remember...
- Your ARA card. If it's your first visit and you haven't got a card yet, make sure that you have two forms of ID with you to complete your application.
- We only use pencils in the search room. Staff can lend you one if necessary.
- A notebook may be useful. We can provide scrap paper.
- We have power points to charge electronic devices but please leave the research room if you are making or taking mobile calls.
- On arrival, you will be asked to put your bag (including laptop bag) and coat in a locker. If you've got several things with you to aid your research, we can give you a clear plastic bag to put them in.
- You are welcome to bring laptops, mobile devices, cameras and stationery into the public research room. The research room is fully wi-fi enabled. However, equipment must have a current Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) label if you want to connect it to our mains electricity supply.
- If you have a suitcase with you, we have some larger lockers for you to use.
Taking photographs
You can use a camera or mobile device to make copies of most of our original documents and publications but please check with staff first as some collections are restricted. You will be required to purchase a camera pass from Reception - please see this page for more information.
We have camera stands for you to use but please ask for our assistance, particularly with large or fragile items.
Need extra documents?
You may order extra documents during your visit, up to 3 items. There are two live runs each day at 10am and 2pm but these are subject to staff availability.
