Career Development Programme
It’s just as important that you develop and grow with us as we move through our improvement journey. All employees in Children’s Services have regular supervisions and annual personal development reviews as well as a comprehensive Continuous Professional Development programme – helping you make the most of your Social Care career.
Training and development
As a GCC employee, you will be eligible to attend a whole host of training opportunities. This includes our corporate training package, with a mix of online and in-person training on topics including Leadership and Management, Courageous Conversations and Unconscious Bias, as well as courses to help your personal life such as on planning for retirement. We also offer coaching and mentoring programmes across the organisation.
We also offer a number of training opportunities with our Social Work Academy including the Essentials 2.0 and 3.0 Programme which defines GCC’s approach to social work through our core principles and the National Assessment & Accreditation System (NAAS) for career development.
We are really keen to ensure that you are given the opportunity to try out different roles to build your skills and develop as a social care professional. This is why we regularly share internal secondment opportunities as a chance to step up or try something new to really challenge yourself. We also use an internal transfer policy which allows for temporary or permanent movement within the service, such as between localities, to similar roles (T&C’s apply).
The Children’s Social Care Career Pathway outlines the opportunities available to you as a practitioner to progress at GCC.
For many, progressing in your career is important and at GCC, your development is important to us too. We want to make sure that you reach your potential and achieve your goals which is why we are dedicated to providing you with the support that you need to advance in your career. We provide a clear and defined pathway to all our Social Workers who wish to progress within Gloucestershire County Council. This means that upon joining us as a Newly Qualified Social Worker, you could become a Senior Social Worker 3 years later!
If working your way up to management level is not for you, we have many horizontal development options available too so you can explore different areas of practice and make your mark.
Throughout your career in Gloucestershire’s Children’s Services, you will be supported by the Social Work Academy and your managers to help you advance through the pathway.
