New-look library challenge hits the right note
The Library Challenge ran from 15 July to 16 September 2023 and about 8,000 children aged three to 12 years old signed up for the challenge.
It aimed to encourage children and their families to discover everything their library service has to offer.
They explored what their library means to them by completing a range of tasks, including reading any books they chose, taking part in events and getting into nature.
Participants also received incentives and prizes along the way, including vouchers for the Museum of Gloucester and Escape Rooms, plus an eco-medal made by The Lab using a laser cutter at Stroud and Tewkesbury libraries.
About 6,000 people registered for musical-themed events across the county, including interactive theatre performances by The Everyman Theatre, instrument crafts and workshops, silent discos and much more.
The Library Challenge took place in all 40 libraries across the county and was free to take part with a library membership. Library membership is also free to any resident in Gloucestershire or neighbouring county.
This year’s challenge might be over, but Gloucestershire Libraries still have lots of events happening across the county.
Halloween Costume Swaps are taking place between 9 October and 1 November to help reduce waste and costs for families. They are currently appealing for costume donations and anyone who can help is encouraged to get in touch with their local library.
A range of free events are also being held during Green Libraries Week, including animal encounters with ZooLab, an Outdoor Learning Session with Wild & Green, Junk Journal Modelling and waste and recycling talks. You can browse and book events at gloucestershire.spydus.co.uk
You can stay updated about next year’s challenge by following Gloucestershire Libraries on social media or sign up to the monthly newsletter.
Cllr Dave Norman, cabinet member for libraries, said: “I would like to give a huge congratulations and thank you to everyone who took part in the new Library Challenge during the summer. I hope the many children and their families who got involved enjoyed the events and had fun exploring what their library has to offer.
“There are still lots of events happening across the county, including the Halloween Costume Swap, so I would encourage everyone to take a look at what’s on offer and sign up.”
