What does the Enablement team do?

The Enablement team supports adults in Gloucestershire to live more independently and safely in their own homes and communities. The team works with people who may need extra help to manage everyday tasks, build confidence or stay connected to the things that matter to them

What support does the team provide?

Enablement is short-term, practical support designed to help people do more for themselves. It is usually provided for up to six months, based on what each person needs and wants to achieve. The focus is on building confidence, improving wellbeing and helping people maintain their independence.

The Enablement team offers a wide range of person-centred support at home and in the community.

At home

  • Keeping the home safe, clean and manageable
  • Support with daily tasks like cooking, cleaning and laundry
  • Help with shopping and healthy eating
  • Advice on home and fire safety
  • Support to organise and declutter living spaces
  • Access to deep cleaning services where needed

Everyday living

  • Help with budgeting and managing money
  • Support with bills and important paperwork
  • Assistance applying for grants or essential household items
  • Support to use digital tools and technology

Building independence

  • Developing skills for day-to-day life
  • Encouraging confidence and routine
  • Supporting people to take small, achievable steps towards their goals

In the community

Enablement also helps people stay connected to their local community and feel confident getting out and about. This can include:

  • accessing local groups and activities
  • using community facilities and services
  • building confidence to go out independently
  • support with using mobile phones and apps.

Travel training

The team can provide travel training to help people become more independent when travelling. This can include:

  • learning to use public transport safely
  • planning journeys and understanding routes
  • travelling to places like shops, appointments and social activities.

Supporting more complex situations

The team also works with people who may be experiencing:

  • self-neglect
  • unsafe or difficult home environments
  • hoarding behaviours.

Support is provided in a sensitive and respectful way, with a focus on improving wellbeing over time.

“For me, it’s about connecting people and being part of the community. A lot of the time, I’m supporting families when things feel overwhelming and helping them find the right place to turn. What I enjoy most is working alongside people day to day. It’s not about going in and telling someone what to do - it’s about listening, understanding what matters to them, and helping them take the steps that feel right for their life.” GCC Enablement Coordinator
