Section 2 – Racecourse Roundabout to Bishop's Cleeve

Section 2 - Racecourse Roundabout to Bishop's Cleeve will deliver cycling and walking improvements alongside the A435 Evesham Road between Cheltenham and Bishop's Cleeve, including around the GE Aviation Roundabout. This new cycleway will link in to Section 1 - Honeybourne Line to Racecourse Roundabout, which has now started construction.

A435 Cycleway

The segregated cycleway will run off-carriageway alongside the east side of the A435 Evesham Road. It will be coloured green, helping to differentiate between cycling and footway sections, where facilities will be fully segregated.

The new footway will run alongside the segregated cycleway and sit between the cycleway and the Racecourse / fields boundary, away from the carriageway of the road.

Sections of shared use path, such as over the GWSR Railway bridge and Hyde Brook bridge, will be clearly signposted, coloured differently and separated by tactile paving, helping to alert of changes in priorities and encouraging cyclists and pedestrians to travel with care and attention. 

The route between Cheltenham and Bishop's Cleeve will be fully streetlit.

A new 40mph speed limit will be introduced along A435 Evesham Road, replacing the current de-restricted (60mph) speed limit. This will link into the existing 40mph to the north and an extended 30mph to the south. View the speed limit plan.

New signalised crossings will be installed on highway arms of the GE Roundabout and at the Evesham Road / Southam Lane junction, providing safer and improved crossing points.

Construction

Section 2 - Cheltenham Racecourse Roundabout to the GE Roundabout, Bishop's Cleeve will be delivered in two phases:

• Phase 1: Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) Bridge to the GE Roundabout, Bishop's Cleeve. Construction started on 6 January 2025 and is expected to finish in Autumn 2025.
• Phase 2: Cheltenham Racecourse Roundabout to GWSR Bridge.  Construction is planned to start on 19 May 2025 and finish in early 2026.
