A466 Wye Valley Rockfall Protection and Slope Stabilisation Works

UPDATE: 1st August 2026

Gloucestershire County Council has completed essential rockfall protection, ground investigation and slope monitoring works along the A466 through the Wye Valley.

The scheme was undertaken to reduce the immediate risks associated with unstable slopes and potential rockfall, helping to improve the safety and resilience of the route for residents, businesses and visitors.

The road was successfully reopened to traffic on 31 July 2026 in line with the overall programme for the works.

During delivery of the scheme, further areas of instability were identified as additional sections of the slope were exposed. This included approximately 90 metres of additional unstable rock face, requiring further stabilisation measures and installation of extra rockfall protection netting.

Extensive vegetation clearance also revealed additional cracking and signs of slope instability. This information will help Gloucestershire County Council develop a long-term engineering solution for the corridor.

Gloucestershire County Council would like to thank local residents, businesses, stakeholders and road users for their patience and understanding while these essential works were undertaken.
