Summer of resurfacing

During the summer of 2023 we kick started a programme to make record numbers of improvements to the county’s roads. The winter of 22/23 was particularly cold and wet which caused damage to our road network. So we boosted investment and tested innovative methods to speed up repairs. The work now continues right through the winter and into the spring of 2024.

 

Five key actions we’re taking to strengthen the county’s roads:

  1. We have got more engineers out and about making urgent repairs. Our new 'Find and Fix' teams are out fixing smaller potholes before they get worse.
  2. We have invested in new machinery for faster repairs - The Spray Injection Patcher, known as a ‘pothole buster’, can fix over 100 potholes in a day.
  3. We are racing to resurface as many roads as possible - 220 roads are set to be resurfaced across the county during this financial year.
  4. We are trialling new techniques with new materials to make repairs stronger in all weather conditions.
  5. We are cracking down on utility companies, to monitor the quality of work they carry out - Almost 80% of roadworks in the county are down to utility companies.

Next week we’ll be working across many sites including resurfacing Tynings Road in Nailsworth and we’ll start on Main Street running between Boddington and Staverton.   • This week our Spray Injection Patcher machine will be fixing potholes North of Gloucester.
  • We will also be making patching repairs to Dale Walk in Bishops Cleeve, Ellenore Drive in Alderton and St Michael's Road in Cirencester.
  • Our new 'find and fix' teams made 600 repairs during their first three days on the job — they are seeking out and fixing smaller potholes before they become a safety hazard.
  • So far during this financial year (between 6 April - 12 June) we have already made 8389 road repairs across the county. 
  • This week we have also launched a feedback survey. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and let us know about your experience of the streets in your local area.

  • So far engineers have found and repaired 1955 smaller potholes before they get worse. This is part of a new approach to prevent further deterioration.
  • We are working at night to resurface the A417 in the Forest of Dean. This week we begin the second leg of work covering the Bromsberrow Heath section, including the M50 Junction 2 slip roads.

  • We are nearing the end of the first phase of surface dressing across the county. Surface dressing helps to prolong the life of our roads and you can view the list of roads to be treated. Soon this schedule will be updated with roads to be completed during the next phase in August.
  • Since the beginning of April we have made 11851 pothole and minor road repairs.
  • And so far this summer our Find and Fix teams have proactively fixed 4000 small potholes before they became safety hazards. This is a new approach we are trialling to get ahead with repairs.
  • At this time of year we are also out cutting grass. This week we will cut at 804 sites across many parishes including Winchcombe, Coaley, Wotton-under-Edge, Hawling, Lower Slaughter, Naunton, Kingswood, Hinton, Uley, Cam and Slimbridge. You can view the grass cutting schedule (XLSX, 1.4 MB).

  • During the summer we must also prepare for winter weather. We are working with councillors to make sure grit bins are installed and topped up across the county.
  • And this is the last week to complete the local roads survey before it closes midday 1 August. We are collecting feedback about the condition of the roads and streets in your area. Your answers will help us improve our highways service.

  • All year round we empty and clean gullies (drains) to prevent flooding. This week in the North of the county we begin clearing 473 gullies in Lansdown Ward and we are working our way through 2086 gullies in Tewkesbury. Also this week in the West we are working in West Dean. In the South: Matson and Robinswood Ward. In the East: Ampney St. Peter, Ampney St. Mary, Ampney Crucis, Barnsley and Preston.   • This summer's road improvement works are part of a £100m resurfacing programme which has been supported by extra funding from central government. This has allowed us to expand annual resurfacing plans and fast track repairs.

You can't apply surface dressings to roads that have deteriorated significantly, so this means that roads being treated may be in a better condition than some others in the county.
