Body Worn Cameras in Trading Standards  

Gloucestershire County Council (the council) accepts that the use of Body Worn Cameras are required to support the council in meeting its aims and objectives for Trading Standards Officers and Enforcement of relevant legislation.  

 

1. Risk Management  

The council recognises that there are risks associated with the use of body worn cameras. The relevant policy aims to ensure appropriate use of the cameras which will in turn help to mitigate the following risks:  

· Harm to individuals, including Officers conducting their duties 
· Damage to the council’s reputation  
· Potential legal action and/or fines against the council or individual(s) 

 

2. Things we will do  

In relation to using the cameras, we will: 

  • Only wear the cameras when carrying out duties

  • Activate the cameras at the officers own discretion 

  • Use the cameras for the purposes of: 

    • Detection of a crime 

    • Preventing assault or harassment 

    • Recording of evidence 

  • Attempt to inform individuals of the use of the cameras once activated or if not immediately possible, as soon as reasonably practicable during the interaction. 

 

3. Retention of data  

Footage from the cameras is retained for 30 days in line with the councils retention schedule. 

Where footage is needed for evidence, or provided to a court for investigation, the footage will be retained for 7 years following the end of any court hearing. 

In the event footage is shared outside of Gloucestershire Trading Standards or used in court, the footage will be redacted to protect the identity of any unrelated individuals.  

4. Policy Review  

This policy will be reviewed as it is deemed appropriate, but no less frequently than every 3 years.
