Things you can do to help your mental health
Self-help techniques can help manage the symptoms of many mental health problems. For some people, they may be enough on their own.
Simple lifestyle changes can also help prevent problems developing or getting worse.
- Find advice on common mental health problems, what you can do now, and wellbeing audio guides on the NHS website.
- The Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust also has information on managing your mental health.
At any given time, around one in four of us will experience a mental health problem. Many common problems, such as depression, anxiety and stress can be relieved by following the NHS's five ways to wellbeing.
Five ways to mental wellbeing
These simple, proven things can support your wellbeing and be part of everyday life:
- Connect with people - stay in touch with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. Talking to others can help you feel supported.
- Get active - find an activity you enjoy, such as walking, cycling or swimming. Even small amounts of movement can help.
- Keep learning - try something new to build confidence and give you a sense of achievement. For example, you could sign up for a cooking course, learn to play an instrument, try a new language or learn how to fix your bike.
- Give - small acts of kindness, like a smile or a thank you, can make a difference. Volunteering can also help you meet people.
- Be mindful - take time to notice the present moment, including your thoughts, feelings and surroundings. This can help you manage how you feel and respond to challenges. Some people call this "mindfulness".
