A4173 Improvements

The A4173 has been identified by the Department for Transport (DfT) as a major road that would benefit from investment to improve safety and road conditions. Gloucestershire County Council has been completing improvements to this key route in the phases below:

The final stage of improvements to the A4173 will be alterations to the junction where it meets the A46 junction. The junction has a long record of collisions and near misses and, whilst some works have been implemented to improve safety, it has remained an issue for the Local Parish Councils, residents and users alike.

Knights Brown have been appointed to carry out these junction changes, and crews will be onsite from 7 October 2019.
At the start of the scheme, local residents and business were invited to meet the contractor and to find out more about the works at Pitchcombe Village Hall.

Our design team has considered a number of options based on traffic modelling and a study of driver behaviour at the current junction. The new junction layout decided to be most appropriate and safe for this junction is a Give way T-junction with right turn lane on the A46.

In November our crews finished upgrading the pedestrian crossings and widening the footway around St Peters School on the A4173. Two new puffin crossings, equipped with sensors that can detect whether any pedestrians are on the crossing, will assist those who need some extra time to cross the road. The work was undertaken between 15^th October and 30^th November 2018. With pupils in mind, the works directly outside of the school were completed during.

Earlier in 2018 extensive drainage repairs, vegetation clearance and safety improvements were carried out on the A4173, a key commuter and bus route between Stroud and Gloucester, as part of a package of works. This was ahead of a major resurfacing scheme which started in May 2018, where we laid a shiny new road surface along the entire five-miles of road in just under seven weeks.

The resurfacing works were well received by the local communities, which were very supportive throughout this complex project.
