A40 Telstar Way and Benhall Roundabout up to Gloucester Road
The A40 junction with B4633 Gloucester Road is now closed until March 2022. Check ourplanned road closures page for information on the diversion route. Please plan your journeys if you are traveling through this part of Cheltenham. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Following the work on the M5 slip road and Arle Court roundabout, the next stage of the project includes significant improvements for cyclists and pedestrians from Arle Court to Cheltenham Railway Station, along with widening the A40 eastbound and Benhall roundabout.
Proposals include:
Arle Court to Gloucester Road/Lansdown Road junction eastbound carriageway improvements (towards Cheltenham town centre)
Improving access for cyclists between Arle Court roundabout and Benhall roundabout
Telstar Way widening to Hubble Road
Benhall Roundabout remodelling including eastbound widening
Cycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements from Arle Court to Cheltenham Railway Station
B4633 Gloucester Road between its junctions with A40 Gloucester Road / Lansdown Road and Fairmount Road will be closed until the end of March 2022.
This is so we can safely work on the junctions with A40. Signs about the closure have been put up near the site with more information. The extent of the closure is larger than our works area for safety, and we will continue to talk with residents to understand their access needs. There will be no vehicle access through the junctions during this closure so we encourage everyone to plan ahead if they need travel through this area.
We will endeavour to keep the scheme's road closures webpage as up to date as possible during this time.
Although the closure is scheduled until the end of March, we want to reassure everyone we will be working with partners and contractors ahead of the Gold Cup Festival to see what can be done to reopen the junction during this major event.
Consultation of key features
A number of key features of the scheme have been consulted on individually in line with formal and informal consultation requirements as set out in the Highways Act 1980 and Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. These features include:
Cycle tracks: Segregated and shared use.
Pedestrians and cyclist road crossings: Toucan crossings and Tiger crossings.
Road humps: Raised tables.
Waiting restrictions: No waiting at any time (double yellow lines).
Alun Griffiths have been appointed as the contractor for this section of the scheme.
Normally we hold drop in events where residents and businesses can ask the team questions face to face, however due to the Coronavirus pandemic this was not possible. Instead, we have held an online live session on YouTube, created a video about the scheme and made a virtual exhibition space to display information in a safe way.
Thank you to everyone who joined the live session on YouTube on 25 February. We will be replying to all emails received. You can watch a recording of the session below.
We were due to hold public share events to display the proposals on the 17 March 2020 at the Hesters Way Community Centre and on the 19 March at the Jury’s Inn, Cheltenham. Due to the unavailability of external experts and consultants, we were unable to hold the share events as planned. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience. The documents for the events are available to view here:
Comments and feedback received on these proposals has been used to inform the design of the scheme and the full business cases.
