Cycling and walking infrastructure plans
The Department for Transport (DfT) launched its Cycle and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS) in April 2017. The strategy outlines Government’s ambition ‘to make cycling and walking the natural choices for shorter journeys or as part of a longer journey’.
Guidance states that networks and routes should be coherent, direct, safe, comfortable and attractive
What is an LCWIP?
Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) set out the strategic approach to identifying long-term cycling and walking improvements and make the case for future investment through funding bids and by informing discussions with developers. The following plans have been published and are available to download here:
- Bishop's Cleeve LCWIP
- Cam & Dursley LCWIP
- Central Severn Vale LCWIP (Cheltenham and Gloucester)
- Cirencester LCWIP
- Countywide CIP
- Newent LCWIP
- Stroud LCWIP
- Tewkesbury LCWIP 2024
Next steps
The authority is developing some more detailed corridor work to enable bids for funding. Those under development include Hartpury-Gloucester, Cirencester and Wotton-Charfield.
We will continue to update and refine the approach to developing infrastructure plans in response to Department for Transport evaluation of the CWIS process and currently anticipate that moving forward, the LCWIP will be informed by urban centres and strategic allocations across the county.
Digital Cycle Map
In addition to LCWIPS a Digital Cycle Map has also been produced to show how emerging networks compliment Local Transport Plan ambitions. This map includes existing known infrastructure and strategic desire lines, each layer of information can be overlaid to help build a visual picture of the broader strategy for cycling across Gloucestershire
