The works
What are we doing?
Gloucestershire County Council is undertaking a programme of monitoring, investigation and design development to better understand the condition of the hillside and identify the most appropriate long-term solution for the landslip.
Recent work has included:
- Site inspections and engineering assessments
- Geotechnical investigations
- Ground condition monitoring
- CCTV drainage surveys
- Pavement core sampling
- Topographical and site surveys
- Development of a permanent remediation design
- Planning for future construction works
Geotechnical investigation works are currently being undertaken between the 29th September and 9th October 2026 under a full 24-hour road closure. The information collected is being reviewed and will help inform the design of the permanent remediation works. The scheme remains in the design development stage.
Why is this work needed?
Ground movement at Cowcombe Hill has affected the stability of land adjacent to the highway. Without intervention, further movement could increase the risk of damage to the road network and lead to greater disruption for residents, businesses and road users.
The project aims to:
- Improve the long-term stability of the slope
- Protect the highway from future ground movement
- Improve the resilience of the A419 corridor
- Maintain safe access for road users
- Reduce the likelihood of future emergency repairs
- Deliver a sustainable long-term engineering solution for the site
The investigations and design work currently being undertaken will help ensure the most effective remediation option is selected before construction works are carried out
Keeping the road safe
The safety of road users remains our highest priority.
Where necessary, temporary traffic management measures may be implemented while investigations and design work are undertaken. These measures allow us to maintain access while ensuring the road can continue to operate safely.
Any changes to traffic management or road closures will be communicated in advance.
