What is fostering?

Give a child a second chance. Fostering is one of the most rewarding and life-changing roles you can take on.

It means opening your home – and your heart – to a child or young person who cannot live with their own family.

Why do children need foster care?

There are many reasons why children need foster care and each young person’s story is unique. They may enter care because of a family breakdown, a parent’s hospital stay, or a situation that threatens the welfare and safety of the children in the family such as physical abuse.

“Fostering is the hardest thing I have ever done but absolutely the most rewarding. You are really making a difference. I know what we have achieved as a family, and I am so very proud to be a foster carer.”

Elaine, Foster Carer

Children who come into care have often experienced trauma, uncertainty, or neglect and foster carers provide a safe, stable, and nurturing environment where children can feel secure, valued, and supported. Whether it’s for a few nights, several months, or longer-term, fostering offers children the chance to grow, heal, and thrive – often for the very first time.

At its core, fostering is about giving a child a second chance: a chance to feel loved, to be heard, and to build a brighter future.
