Steps to transferring

Switch in simple steps. You could be in our fostering family in as little as 8 weeks.

Introduction Section Image

The transfer of foster carers between fostering agencies or local authorities is governed by best practice and protocol, rather than mandatory requirements.

The principle we follow is that all foster carers have the right to freedom of movement between fostering services. We will ensure our switch to us is a seamless transition – for you, your family, and the children in your care. We will work closely with you to ensure stability and consistency continues for the child or young person in your care.

No two situations are ever identical but below you will find a general roadmap to switching fostering agencies.

Step 1: Let's chat.

Start by getting in touch for a relaxed, confidential conversation. We’ll listen to your reasons for transferring and explain how we’ll support you every step of the way.

Step 2: Application

You’ll complete a new application and, once we’ve accepted this, you’ll need to let your current agency know. If you have a foster child already living with you, we’ll work together to make sure everything stays as stable as possible.

Step 3: Updated assessment

We’ll complete an updated assessment with you— but don’t worry, it’s quicker this time as your experience and training count for a lot. We use the information already in your fostering file and will expedite our visits and background checks. We may even be able to use the references you already have. Together we'll make sure everything is in place for a successful transfer.

Step 4: Approval & transition

Once approved, we’ll work closely with your previous agency to make the handover seamless, especially if you’re currently caring for a child.

Step 5: Welcome

You’ll officially join our fostering family, with access to ongoing training, a dedicated supervising social worker, competitive fees and allowances, and all the support you need to thrive.
