What is safeguarding?

Adult safeguarding is about working with adults who have care and support needs to keep them safe from abuse or neglect. It is a key responsibility for local councils and an important part of many public services.

Safeguarding focuses on people who may be vulnerable and at risk. Local services work together to identify risks and take action to protect them.

Our aim is to help adults maintain independence and live a life free from abuse and neglect. Everyone has the right to be safe, respected and heard - and everyone has a role to play in making this happen.

Abuse is when someone does or says something which harms you or makes you feel upset and scared. It is always unacceptable. Everyone has a right to be treated with dignity and respect.

Abuse can happen once or continue over weeks, months, or even years. It can take many forms. There isn’t a complete list, but government guidance highlights several types of abuse and neglect.
