Anxiety is one of the most common barriers to learning, attendance, and wellbeing. For some students, traumatic experiences significantly shape how anxiety shows up in them and their life.

This webinar equips frontline practitioners with a trauma‑informed framework for recognising signs of anxiety, interpreting behaviour through a trauma lens, and responding in ways that offer experiences and feelings of safety.

You’ll learn practical strategies to reduce overwhelm, support regulation, and build relational safety - helping anxious students reconnect, feel seen, understood, and supported.

Grounded in KCA’s trauma-informed and relational approach, this training enables participants to connect theory to daily practice in a meaningful and accessible way. This training looks at Five to Thrive through the lens of the role of designated teacher.

The session develops a foundational understanding of how the human brain responds to stress. Participants explore the neurobiology of stress, focusing on how unregulated stress impacts brain development, impairs regulation, and can lead to trauma. We will then look at the importance of attachment knowledge and understanding and how we can nurture and repair attachments. This training highlights how stress, trauma and attachment affects behaviour, relationships and learning. Participants reflect and develop their understanding through reflection and discussion opportunities.

Participants will be introduced to the Five to Thrive model as a way to co-regulate with individuals who are, in the moment, unable to self-regulate. We look at the five steps of Five to Thrive and we will deepen our understanding of how these five key activities support emotional regulation, attachment, and recovery from trauma.

This training will include the activity Seven Small Things That Make a Big Difference, which applies the science and understanding to seven direct applications to practice. This activity support the application to universal, whole group and whole setting practice as well as developing and maintaining positive relationships with all members of the community.

Key Aims

  • Neuroscience of Stress, Trauma and Relational Practice
  • To understand Five To Thrive as a model and framework for co-regulation
  • To be equipped with practical tools using ‘7 small things that make a big difference’

The session develops an understanding of connected versus disconnected children and young people. Participants explore the three core human needs and how when these needs are not met, it leads to disconnection.

Disconnection is the basis of challenges that children and young people have with attending education settings. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect and develop their understanding of this through group discussion activities.

The Five to Thrive model will be demonstrated as a way to support young people to co-regulate who are disconnected from education settings and/or find it challenging to attend through developing connected relationships.

We also discuss how sharing this model, approach and framework with parents and carers can support and nurture.

This training will include an activity that looks at the three core human needs and what we can do as education settings to meet those needs for individuals who are more vulnerable to disconnection. This activity will develop your own practice and allow you to produce an action plan that can be used for both targeted work with a child or young person held in mind as well as at the universal level.

Key Aims

  • An introduction to disconnection and connection in relation to attendance
  • To look at the three core human needs
  • To look at practical examples that will support attendance for individuals and whole communities

This course looks at the different transitions that young people from Year 11 to adulthood may be impacted by and how change, transition and uncertainty can negatively impact on young people’s brains and nervous systems.

We think about the challenges that come with the lead-up to Post 16. The course will support participants in thinking about opportunities and understanding as well as the potential impact on self-esteem and confidence when choices made are not successful and what we can do to support young people before, during and after this challenging time.

Time is given to delve into a better understanding of adolescent brain changes that impact on resilience, behaviour and how young people respond to adult interaction, guidance and support. We look at what that means for young people in both individual and group scenarios. We also highlight the challenges that can occur to connected relationships during adolescence and what we can all do to maintain positive connected relationships throughout this time.

Practical examples of what we can do to support young people through those changes and transitions at this stage of their development are investigated.

This training will include an activity that forms the basis of a transition planning document that practitioners, as well as other members of the team around a young person, can use to plan and support young people throughout this transition.

Key Aims

  • To reflect upon the transitions that happen from Year 11 to adulthood and the impact that may have on young people
  • To understand adolescent brain changes
  • To gain some practical examples and planning tools to support young people through transitions from Year 11 to adulthood

This course enables participants to reflect on their experiences of transition and change and how we support vulnerable children and young people through transition.

We will look at what works to reduce overwhelm and stress, and what can cause it to be more challenging. We will also look at different types of transitions that children and young people may face and identify those children and young people who are more vulnerable to stress during this time.

Participants will benefit from deeper content around attachment, trauma, relationships and transitions, delving into factors affecting resilience and vulnerability. Both the negative and positive impacts of transition on both the brain and the nervous system will be explored.

Using the Five to Thrive approach as a way to support children and young people who are dysregulated, we will investigate how to support our vulnerable learners through change and transition, enabling them to develop new connected relationships and feel safely held through this challenging time.

Different examples of transitions will be discussed as well as practical support ideas and what buffers against the potential negative impacts of those transitions.

Key Aims

  • To reflect on the impact of transitions and changes especially on vulnerable individuals
  • To look at Five to Thrive and how it can be used to support transition
  • To look at examples of transitions and practical examples of how we can support others through them

In this course, we will cover why young people may become involved, how to recognise the signs, and how to have supportive conversations that keep them safe.

Despite reports of a rise in youth knife crime, particularly in major UK cities, the vast majority of young people in the UK are not involved with gangs, knives and guns and probably never will be.

However, whilst they might never have real life experience of gangs and gang life, most young people will have views and opinions based on things they have seen and heard growing up.

Social media, music videos, gaming and ‘gangster’ movies along with the opinions of family and friends, all influence choices made, both positive and negative.

This webinar will cover:

  • Identification: Recognise the early "push and pull" factors of gang recruitment and the specific indicators of CCE, including "County Lines" involvement.
  • The Grooming Process: Understand the sophisticated grooming techniques used to exploit vulnerable students and how this differs from peer-on-peer grouping.
  • Safeguarding & Law: Navigate the legal framework surrounding CCE, including the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) and the impact of "Joint Enterprise."
  • Language & Banter: Challenge the glamorisation of gang culture and understand the nuances of the language used by students to mask exploitation.
  • Practical Intervention: Implement effective school-based strategies for early intervention and robust partnership working with external agencies.

Behaviours which appear to have minimal triggers but can be extreme in nature are an increasing feature in our schools. In this full-day session, we will explore:

  • What is happening with children when behaving impulsively?
  • What are the key principles for more successfully pre-empting these moments?
  • Explore key principles of how to respond when impulsive behaviours occur.

Throughout the day, participants will build a detailed and high quality individual behaviour plan for a child in their school that can be put into practice.

It will be a practical day based on real life in our schools in 2026, giving participants time to talk and reflect on the challenges these behaviours bring to us every day.

Keith Bates has been in education for thirty years, most recently working as Director of Inclusion in a MAT having always worked in the areas of behaviour and inclusion.

For fifteen years Keith worked in a residential SEMH special school in Norfolk. He led the school for eight years. As Director of Inclusion, he worked with eighteen schools across primary, secondary and special education. During that time, all the primary schools in the Trust saw a drop in their numbers of suspensions and exclusions when compared to previous years. None of the primary schools permanently excluded a pupil during those two years.

He has based his career on the concept of inclusive education and, even in this most challenging of education landscapes and now runs his own support services for schools across England and Wales. He is the co-author of a book for school leaders on leading behaviour and culture in schools.
